The Playford Memorial Trust scholarships have been established to encourage high achieving South Australian students to undertake studies that focus on areas of strategic importance to South Australia. These include: Agriculture and Food Production; Water, Energy and Climate Change; Advanced Manufacturing and New Technologies; and Mining and Resources Development.
We assist students from regional areas with the expenses of relocation to Adelaide, as well as providing 1st year Undergraduate Scholarships; Honours and 4th year Scholarships; and Masters and PhD Scholarships. In addition, a range of Defence Honours Scholarships and Defence and STEM Internships are available in association with the Department of State Development and the Defence Teaming Centre. The Trust also offers TAFE Study Awards in areas related to horticulture, agriculture, mining and food technology.
Where possible, the Trust uses the links with its partners including the universities and the Playford Trust Scholars Association to offer work experience, internships, networking and mentoring opportunities for its Playford Trust scholars.
The Industry/Playford partnerships have been operating successfully for many years and we welcome new partners to provide additional support. Partnerships are a great way for industry to support and gain access to research undertaken by the best students in South Australia.
The Playford Trust works with partners and the universities to offer opportunities for leading edge research that is relevant to their specific needs. The Trust calls for applications, works with Partners to select the scholarship recipients and administers the funds. The Industry contribution goes directly to funding the scholarship. The Playford Trust may supplement the scholarship with joint naming rights.
Partners enjoy their interaction with scholars, which adds to the scholar’s industry experience, future employment options and gives Partners access to skills, knowledge and research outcomes.
About the Trust
The Playford Memorial Trust, was established over thirty years ago, with the bipartisan support of the South Australian Parliament to honour the memory of Sir Thomas Playford, the State’s longest serving Premier. The Trust is governed by a voluntary Board and is administered with the assistance of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
Its primary objective is to encourage young high-achieving South Australians to further their studies by providing scholarships. These scholarships extend from the TAFE system to university undergraduates, Honours and PhD students at each of the three universities in South Australia.
The Trust Deed requires the scholarships to be in the fields of science, mathematics, agriculture, mining, environmental science, horticulture, marine science, geoscience and all disciplines of engineering.
Currently there are over forty scholarships awarded each year, with funds to finance the scholarships coming from a range of sources, including income from an investment fund, donations from individuals, grants from the State Government and industry partnerships.
