About the Trust
The Playford Memorial Trust was established in 1983, with the bipartisan support of the South Australian Parliament, to honour the memory of Sir Thomas Playford, the State’s longest serving Premier.
Its primary objective is to support high-achieving South Australian students working in areas of strategic importance to the State.
Each year, the Trust and its partners across industry, government, the education sector and the community provide close to $500,000 in scholarships, internships and awards to university undergraduates, Honours and PhD students, and to students at varying levels at TAFE.
Its priority areas include: agriculture and food production; water, energy and climate change; advanced manufacturing and new technologies; health sciences and enabling technologies; and mining and resources development.
The Trust is governed by a voluntary board and administered with assistance from the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. Funds to finance its programs come from a range of sources, including income from its own investment fund, contributions or sponsorships from businesses and industry associations, donations from individuals and foundations, grants from government, and bequests.
The Playford Memorial Trust offers programs to support high achieving South Australian students in a range of ways.
- We provide scholarships for:
- 1st year undergraduates
- Honours and 4th year students
- We provide a range of Defence Honours Scholarships and Defence and STEM Internships in association with the Department of State Development and the Defence Teaming Centre
- We offer TAFE Study Awards in areas related to horticulture; aquaculture; agriculture; conservation and land management; mining and exploration; spatial information and surveying; and food technology.
- We assist students from regional areas with the expenses of relocating to Adelaide.
Where possible, the Trust uses links with its corporate partners, the universities and the Playford Trust Scholars Association (former beneficiaries) to offer work experience, internships, networking and mentoring opportunities for the scholars it supports.
For many years, the Trust has worked successfully with some of South Australia’s most respected businesses, the three main universities, the research sector and philanthropists to extend the reach of its scholarship programs and increase the value of the grants and internships it can provide.
Partnering with a respected entity like the Playford Trust is an excellent way for organisations to support and identify new talent, as well as gain access to valuable research undertaken by the State’s best students.
The support of contributing partners is publicised through the Trust’s newsletter, on its website, through the media and at annual scholarship awards nights attended by leading members of the business, community, government and university sectors.
We encourage interaction between partners and scholars because there are clear benefits for both parties. Forming relationships gives partners access to valuable skills, knowledge and research outcomes, and enhances the scholars’ industry experience, networks and future employment options.
The Playford Trust welcomes the opportunity to explore new partner relationships that could further the education and training of talented young South Australians and strengthen and develop industries vital to the State’s economic future. Contact us to find out more.
