The Hon Dr Don Hopgood AO is Deputy Chair of the board of the Playford Memorial Trust.  He was born in Prospect and completed studies at Adelaide Teachers College, the University of Adelaide and Flinders University, where he attained degrees, graduate and post-graduate qualifications.  

Don was a teacher until he was elected to the South Australian Parliament in the State seat of Mawson in the House of Assembly in 1970.  He retired in 1993 after serving nine years as Deputy Premier and in various ministerial positions including Environment, Health and Education.  In his retirement Don studied for a further degree in Theology.

Don was elected as Moderator of the Synod of South Australia of the Uniting Church for a two-year term between 1997-1999.  He plays cornet and flugelhorn in the Onkaparinga City Concert Band and leads his own jazz group.  Helping to keep him busy, Don accepts invitations to speak to voluntary organisations including the University of the Third Age.  

Don has a life-long interest in astronomy, shared by fellow Playford Trust board member, Don Bursill.
