About Us
The Playford Trust is an independent organisation which enjoys the bi-partisan support of government. It operates under its own deed with its Committee, including the Chairman and Deputy Chairman, being appointed by the Premier. Its original objective, as expressed in the trust deed was:
To establish a fund to promote, encourage and finance research and development of projects relating to the primary, secondary, tertiary and mining industries which will be of practical use and benefit to South Australians.
The Trust initially assisted PhD students involved in horticulture and aquaculture which were two areas of particular interest to Sir Thomas Playford. To these traditional areas the Trust has more recently added water, energy and climate change, advanced manufacturing and new technologies, and mining and resources development.
Research in these fields is vital to South Australia’s future economic development and the Trust wishes to encourage talented people to enhance their knowledge and skills in these important career directions.
