Scantech/Playford Honours Physics Scholarships

Two scholarships of $5,000

Two scholarships of $5,000 each are offered through the generous sponsorship of Scantech International.  Scantech was founded in 1981 as a small privately owned company based in South Australia.  It has grown rapidly and is now a publicly listed company providing a range of sophisticated monitoring technologies for mining and manufacturing industries with a world-wide customer base.  (For further details see www.scantech.com.au)

Nominations for Scantech/Playford Honours Physics Scholarships are sought each year from the three South Australian universities for the consideration of the Trust.  It is expected that the universities will select the highest calibre students through an internal process that takes account of the selection criteria given below.  Scantech has indicated a preference for at least one of the scholars each year to have a specialisation in nuclear physics.

Disclosure of any other awards or scholarships held by the nominees is also required.

The Selection Criteria

  • Nominees must be South Australian residents who are likely to spend a significant part of their career in South Australia or are otherwise likely to be providing a benefit to the State (clearly it is often difficult to assess the future career prospects of students, however, the Trust is not looking to support students from outside the State or Australia, who are merely undertaking studies in South Australia).
  • Nominees must be high achievers with an excellent undergraduate academic record.
  • Nominees should be of good character and preference should be given to students that display leadership potential.

Overcome significant disadvantage

The Trust would consider a case where the university feels that a particular student has had to overcome a significant disadvantage that may have impacted to some degree on their academic record.  In such instances, the university should indicate the nature of the disadvantage and make a case for its confidence in the ultimate success of the student in making an impact in his or her chosen field.

Awards will be made to students only when the nominating university is able to demonstrate vigorous quality assurance and selection processes behind their nominations.
